This production is a recreation of Luc Bondy's legendary staging, originally premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1992. Widely considered a directorial classic of the late 20th century, the production has been celebrated as a highly sublime family chamber play that turns the work itself into the hero, effectively presenting Richard Strauss's opera as a psychological thriller. Following its success in Salzburg, the staging traveled to major international houses including the Royal Opera House in London, La Monnaie in Brussels, and La Scala in Milan. Its enduring success lies in Bondy's focus on toxic family structures and dynamics, stripping away kitsch and bombast for psychological clarity. The scenic restaging for the Volksoper's Vienna premiere (2023) was overseen by Marie-Louise Bischofberger-Bondy, preserving the original artistic vision. The visual world is defined by Erich Wonder's set design and Susanne Raschig's costumes, complemented by Lucinda Childs's choreography.
