A breathtaking encounter between ice and fire. Step into a world of contrasts in both temperature and tempo as acclaimed Finnish conductor Emilia Hoving leads the orchestra through widely different soundscapes. Composer Outi Tarkiainen grew up near the Arctic Circle with the ancient clinking, moaning, and rumbling of ice in her ears. Her Songs of the Ice traces the ice’s transformation through the seasons. The tale of the beautiful Firebird, who brings both fortune and misfortune to whoever manages to capture her, is told by Igor Stravinsky with rhythms and orchestration as dazzling as the Firebird’s plumage. The concert offers a dynamic meeting between the barren iciness of Nordic nature and the burning intensity of the Russian fairytale tradition.
