Premiered in 2009 at English National Opera, David Alden’s production has become a global reference. Its striking visual world is built on Paul Steinberg’s fractured-perspective sets and Adam Silverman’s lighting, which carves out menacing shadows. The result is a deeply expressionist universe that probes the psyche of a hunted man and exposes the fanaticism of an inward-looking community. This is a historic co-production launched by English National Opera, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and Ópera de Oviedo (2009). The work marks the rebirth of English opera, unleashing elemental forces in which the orchestral interludes evoke the sea, dawn and storm with unparalleled power. Around the production, the Opéra national du Capitole offers a range of cultural events, including family choral workshops, a study day in partnership with the IRPALL institute, and talks exploring musical England and the opera’s moral questions.
