With a golden timbre, shimmering vibrato, and an elegantly seamless legato, Joseph Calleja upholds the art of the great lyric tenors of the past century. Born in Malta in 1978, he discovered opera at thirteen thanks to the film The Great Caruso, not knowing he would win Milan’s Caruso Competition a few years later. He signed with Decca at twenty-five and established himself on the world’s leading stages. From the Met to Covent Garden, from Vienna to the Bastille, he has triumphed as the Duke of Mantua, Alfredo, Rodolfo, Cavaradossi, Hoffmann, and Faust, roles he embodies with communicative fervor. For his first recital at the Capitole, he blends Slavic melancholy with Italian ardor. At his side is French pianist Sarah Tysman, active in Vienna and Berlin and a partner of many leading singers.
