About this event

This two-part ballet evening creates a unique encounter between George Gershwin's "An American in Paris" and Igor Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps." Geographically and musically, the two composers seem far apart: while the Russian innovator radically expanded musical tradition with loud sounds and oblique harmonies, the American musical genius perfected "symphonic jazz" with lively rhythms, car horn sounds, and saxophone melodies. What connects both composers is the city of Paris. Gershwin's stay in Paris in 1926 inspired his famous tone poem "An American in Paris," while Stravinsky premiered his scandalous ballet music "Le Sacre du Printemps" (The Rite of Spring) there in 1913. The two composers first met personally in New York in 1925, and this production reunites their works 100 years later at the Gärtnerplatztheater. The first half features choreography by Jeroen Verbruggen set to Gershwin and Copland, while the second half features Marco Goecke's choreography for Stravinsky's masterpiece.
