After the death of his beloved Eurydice, Orpheus vows to plunge into the depths of the Underworld to bring her back. Moved by Orpheus’s passion, Amore (Cupid) appears and agrees to aid him on one condition: he must not look at Eurydice until they return to the world of the living. With the help of the spirits of the Underworld, Orpheus finds Eurydice in Elysium. As he guides her to the surface without looking back, Eurydice believes this means he no longer loves her and refuses to go on unless he looks at her. He does, leading to consequences that may surprise modern audiences. Inspired by the same Greek myth that fueled the Broadway hit Hadestown, Gluck’s 1774 French score is enriched by Hector Berlioz’s 1859 re-orchestration, making this timeless tale resonate anew. Performances are sung in French with English supertitles.
