This production of Georges Bizet's 1875 hit opera explores the complex psychology of its heroine, Carmen, framing her story through a modern lens of fatal domestic violence. The directorial vision questions the dichotomy of Carmen's initial declaration of being "free as a bird" against her ultimate resignation to a fate where she seeks out the man she knows will kill her. The staging emphasizes the tragic reality that a man's greatest fear is being mocked, while a woman's greatest fear is being killed. Drawing a stark parallel to contemporary society, the production notes highlight that one in five murders in Denmark is committed by a current or former partner. In this context, Carmen becomes a symbol for all female victims of fatal partner violence, leaving the audience to grapple with the incomprehensible nature of such tragedies. The production is uniquely performed in Danish with Danish supertitles, utilizing a translation by Jens Louis Petersen to bring the narrative closer to the local audience.
