About this event
Mozart wrote his C minor mass in 1782–83 when he was 24–25 years old, newly married, and attempting to establish a career in Vienna as an independent artist. According to legend, Mozart promised God (or his father) that he would write a grand mass if his marriage to Constance was blessed. The Mass in C minor was premiered in 1783, before it was completely finished, featuring his wife Constance as a soloist. The mass is described as solemn, powerful, and dramatic, featuring a roaring choir and soloists expressing a longing for clarity and a search for meaning. A notable highlight of the work is the soprano aria “Et incarnatus est,” which is considered one of Mozart’s most beautiful moments, featuring a heavenly trio for flute, oboe, and bassoon.
