About this event

Self-celebration is rare with Beethoven, which gives his judgment of the Missa solemnis even greater weight. “The greatest work I have composed so far,” he said after devoting a solid four years to it, aiming “to arouse and continuously instill religious feelings in both the singers and the listeners.” It is hard not to reach for superlatives about this graced ninety minutes, and not to return, like to an inexhaustible spring, to the Benedictus—a moment of levitation in which the solo violin brings an angelic presence. This concert assembles a distinguished vocal quartet under the direction of Petr Popelka.
