There was the piano, again and above all; then the lied, to sing of love; and finally the string quartet. Having tried his hand at these forms, Schumann could approach the piano quartet, a genre that Mozart before him had brought out of the shadows and magnified. Its reserve and contained ardor yield ineffable moments—such as the almost whispered opening curtain and the elegiac Andante cantabile of the third movement. “I was truly enchanted by this work,” wrote Clara, “as fresh and youthful as a first attempt.” This is a favorite page for our distinguished guest, Emanuel Ax, appearing here in the PHILHAR’ INTIME series with musicians of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
