A two-evening orchestral program pairs French color and Russian intensity under Kazuki Yamada with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. The concert opens with Camille Saint-Saëns’s Danse macabre, whose dark humor and rattling xylophone conjure a midnight dance of skeletons. At the center of the evening, Truls Mørk interprets Dmitri Shostakovich’s first Cello Concerto, a work of diabolical virtuosity and layered ambiguity, written for the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. The climax arrives with Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3, the ‘Organ’ Symphony, whose grandeur and subtle echoes of the Dies irae fill the Auditorium’s space. The venue’s organ is brought to life by Alma Bettencourt, ensuring the score’s full sonic impact. Together, these works trace a path from macabre wit to psychological depth and, finally, to symphonic splendor.
