About this event

This production of 1984 is a grandiose, brutal love story set in a totalitarian society where truth is tightly regulated. In a world where lies become normalized and history is continually rewritten, the population of Oceania is under constant surveillance, immersed in a daily torrent of propaganda and doublethink. The dystopian world is brought to life through music that is by turns brutal and tender, proceeding at a cinematic pace. The production is on loan from Theater Regensburg, named Theatre of the Year in Germany in 2025. The opera, composed by Lorin Maazel and premiered at Covent Garden in 2005, is described as a merciless operatic experience that refuses to let go.
