A prodigy of music, Mendelssohn wrote his first opera at twelve and, already as a teenager, established himself as one of the most gifted composers of his generation. Exacting with himself, he produced several masterpieces before his premature death. Pairing the Concerto for Two Pianos with Symphony No. 4 places two periods of his career side by side. The Concerto, still shaped by Classicism, was written to play privately with his sister Fanny; here, long-time partners Ludmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle bring this rarely heard score to light. Symphony No. 4 stands at the height of maturity, begun after a long journey through Italy and suffused with Mediterranean sunlight. Twenty-five-year-old conductor Swann Van Rechem leads the Orchestre de chambre de Paris for the first time in this program.
