About this event

A concert performance of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, presented by the Gewandhausorchester under HK Gruber at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. The event forms part of the focus “Tacheles – Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony 2026” and is supported by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, New York. The Gewandhaus contextualizes the work with Leipzig’s own history: the opera’s world premiere took place in the city on 9 March 1930 and led to one of the Weimar Republic’s major theatre scandals, with disruptions by NSDAP agitators and denunciations in the local press. The historical note recalls conductor Gustav Brecher’s ousting in 1933 and tragic death in 1940, and Weill’s emigration to the USA. A pre-concert introduction by Dr. Ann-Katrin Zimmermann is scheduled at 18:45 in the Schumann-Eck.
