The 1st Chamber Concert: New Music for Mallets and Strings explores the acoustic and textural interplay between vibraphone, marimba, and a string ensemble in the resonant setting of the Allerheiligen Hofkirche. Framing a world premiere by Konstantia Gourzi, the program juxtaposes rhythmically intricate contemporary pieces by Andy Akiho and lyrical works by Mario Carro and Saverio Tasca. It culminates with crossover arrangements: Steve Swallow’s jazz standard Falling Grace and Astor Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango gems, reimagined for mallets and strings. The concert showcases mallet instruments as both rhythmic engines and melodic voices within a chamber texture, highlighting their versatility alongside the expressive range of the strings.
