About this event

An evening of words and music marking the centenary year of Rainer Maria Rilke’s death, this program explores his formative relationship with writer and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas‑Salomé. Letters, poems, and reflections from their intense correspondence are interwoven with solo piano works chosen for Rilke’s affinities—especially his deep connection to Russia—and for personal links to composers such as Ferruccio Busoni and Dora Pejačević, who knew him. Burgtheater actors Katharina Lorenz and Felix Kammerer give voice to Lou and the young Rilke, while pianist Dominik Ilisz frames and illuminates the texts with music by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Bach/Busoni, Pejačević, and Poulenc. Part of the Musikverein’s “Wort Musik II” series, the evening balances literary insight with an intimate concert atmosphere.
