This moderated concert program presents a selection of the most popular works by the Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The production highlights the emotional breadth of Schumann's repertoire, from the tender poetry and sweeping momentum of his Piano Concerto to the radiant splendor of his Symphony No. 3. The "Rhenish" Symphony, composed during a brief, happy period in Düsseldorf in the autumn of 1850, balances cheerfulness with archaic, mysterious dignity. The Piano Concerto in A minor serves as a musical document of Schumann's love for the piano virtuoso Clara Wieck and their struggle to marry. The production marks significant debuts for its featured artists. The award-winning, Siberian-born and Basel-based pianist Sergey Tanin introduces himself to the Tonkünstler audience with this performance. Additionally, the young Colombian conductor Ana Maria Patiño-Osorio celebrates her Tonkünstler debut on the podium, leading the orchestra through this purely Schumann program.
