The Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich presents an evening that bridges the symphonic vision of Vienna with the rich, rhythmic traditions of Hungary. The production traces Franz Schubert's self-described path to the great symphony, culminating in his monumental Great C major Symphony (D 944), a work premiered only in 1839, eleven years after the composer's death. Conductor Andreas Ottensamer—scion of a Viennese musical family who moved from the Berlin Philharmonic’s principal clarinet chair to the podium—leads the orchestra. Ottensamer also nods to his Hungarian maternal roots by opening with Zoltán Kodály’s vibrant Dances of Galánta. Centered in the first half is Hungarian violinist Barnabás Kelemen, winner of the Kossuth Prize and Gramophone Classical Music Award, who performs Béla Bartók’s early and deeply personal Violin Concerto No. 1, originally composed for Stefi Geyer. The program unites heritage, passion, and symphonic grandeur across a carefully curated arc.
