Davóne Tines conceived Concerto No. 2: "Anthem" as part of an ongoing concerto project that reimagines the musical rituals of nationhood through a Black, queer, classically trained perspective. Premiered in 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the work weaves an arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Michael Schachter, new music by Caroline Shaw and Tyshawn Sorey, and texts by poet Mahogany L. Browne into a single dramatic arc for bass-baritone and orchestra. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin frames "Anthem" between Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, drawing a through-line of mourning, dissent, and political critique.
