Director Lotte de Beer returns to Dutch National Opera to interpret Der fliegende Holländer from Senta’s perspective as a free‑spirited artist. Senta’s world appears like a painting from a romanticised past in which she has become trapped. In this staging, the Dutchman functions as Senta’s muse, inspiring her to break free from her familiar surroundings. Ultimately, his nihilism pushes her to discover her own voice and self‑expression. The production explores themes of desire, curse, and redemption through this fresh artistic lens.
