An icy chill prevails at the Spanish court: Crown Prince Don Carlo loses his bride Elisabetta for political reasons to his own father, the King of Spain. The prince’s political ambitions also come to nothing. The king, in turn, is powerless before the fanatical Grand Inquisitor. Only Carlo’s friend Rodrigo seems able to transcend the limits of political and private constraints, yet his bold dream of freedom leads to catastrophe. Premiered in 1867, Verdi’s opera paints a disturbingly modern panorama of a society in which politics and private happiness are irreconcilable. In collaboration with the Salzburg Easter Festival, Semperoper presents Don Carlo in the four-act Italian version of 1884, expanded by a newly composed orchestral prologue and a solo-cello interlude by Manfred Trojahn that narrate the prehistory of the drama. The library as a place of knowledge and power forms the central directorial concept by Vera Nemirova, realized in Heike Scheele’s set design.
