Christopher Wheeldon’s adaptation of Cinderella offers a fresh, cinematic take on the classic fairy tale, originally created specifically for Dutch National Ballet in 2012. Drawing on the Brothers Grimm rather than Perrault, Wheeldon and co-librettist Craig Lucas emphasize a more poetic, human story, paired with the emotional sweep of Prokofiev’s score. Cinderella is portrayed as a self-assured young woman, while the Prince—named Prince Guillaume—emerges as a vivid, modern character. The production’s visual world, crowned with a Prix Benois de la Danse, blends Julian Crouch’s Victorian-meets-contemporary designs with Basil Twist’s breathtaking puppetry for the magical tree and carriage, enhanced by Natasha Katz’s lighting and Daniel Brodie’s video design.
