Presented as part of San Diego Musical Theatre's Off-Broadway Series, this production of Reefer Madness is a raucous musical comedy that takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana. The staging embraces the campy, satirical tone of the 1998 musical adaptation, which was originally designed to mock the stone-faced 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film of the same name. The production highlights the hysterical downward spiral of its protagonists, filling the stage with exaggerated depictions of evil jazz music, sex and violence to underscore the absurdity of the original film's cautionary message.
