Director Lotte de Beer brings the iconic Broadway musical Chicago to the Volksoper Wien stage, framing the narrative through a Brechtian lens. The production explores our fascination with evil and the entertainment value derived from humanity’s darker side. De Beer’s vision seduces with the glamour of jazz and dance, then starkly reveals the reality of murder and moral decay. Working with multi-award-winning, Cuban-born choreographer Arielle Smith, the staging promises electrifying dance sequences that are central to the musical. Set designer Christof Hetzer, costume designer Jorine van Beek, and lighting designer Alex Brok together construct the seductive and treacherous world of 1920s showbiz.
