Contemporary & Modern Dance
Locking, also known as Campbellocking, is a classic funk dance style characterized by fast, dynamic movements punctuated by sudden freezes and a playful, expressive character. Invented by Don Campbell and popularized by The Lockers on Soul Train, the style has a deep cultural history within funk music and street dance. This class offers an immersive introduction to Locking’s foundations, breaking down core elements such as grooves, the Lock, Points, and Wrist Rolls. Instructor Jan Kwong also shares the historical context of Locking and funk music so students understand the roots behind the moves. Each session drills these basics and combines them into a short routine, and ends with freestyle to cultivate musicality and individual expression. The environment is supportive and joyful, welcoming beginners and experienced dancers alike to train together to classic funk tunes.
