From heavy metal to hardcore to jazz and ambient: the musical development of Bohren & Der Club of Gore is highly unique. Since 1988, the trio from Mülheim an der Ruhr has been crafting instrumental horror soundtracks. The band describes their style as "doom-ridden jazz music," "detective jazz," or even "boring instrumental music." They build meditative, atmospheric soundscapes that scrape the edge of complete standstill—menacing yet beautiful, slow yet full of tension. On darkened stages, the music is reduced to its bare essence with no distracting stage show, so nothing diverts the audience from listening. Any typical rock/pop tendencies toward personality cults, frontman focus, or sprawling solos are absent—often with a dry pinch of humor left intact.
