Das Restaurant is the first joint cabaret program by well-known Austrian actors Manuel Rubey and Simon Schwarz. Born from a desire for change and the courage to try a new genre, the piece grew alongside the pair’s popular pre-launch podcast. The staging relies on pronounced physicality that goes far beyond classic stand-up. Its stage energy springs from the duo’s contrasting personas: Schwarz, battling nerves in front of the curtain, and Rubey, a sensitive cabaret nostalgist who urges calm while invoking cabaret’s cultural standards. Unexpected elements appear, including a tongue-in-cheek ballet interlude with Schwarz in white tights and highly physical exchanges during interrogation scenes. Thematically, the production uses the world of experience-driven gastronomy as a mirror of society. It satirizes the celebrity dream of a Michelin-starred restaurant and skewers money laundering, exploitation of interns, extravagant VIP requests, and culinary greenwashing that rebrands a derelict inn as “nature cuisine.”
