The lightest is the hardest – violin, Styrian harmonica, guitar and tuba – four virtuoso musicians weave a dynamic, chamber-like fabric that blossoms with an elegance and lightness one would hardly expect from folk music. Jazz shimmers in the improvisations, classical training shows in the immaculate ensemble playing, and the many allusions reveal the wide horizons of four world citizens who remain naturally rooted in their homeland. This music resists easy categorization and joyfully confounds the ear. Maxjoseph’s sound is not just a synthesis of art and popular music, of old and new, of folk and classical – it is an invitation to a dialogue in which borders blur while one stays grounded, anchored in home. “NAU” is the ensemble’s current album and program – music that has been missing not only in Bavaria but far beyond: light-footed, charming, and full of fresh, original ideas that break clichés and reinterpret folk music in entirely new ways.
