About this event
Irmgard Knef, the fictional and luckless twin sister of the German postwar icon Hildegard Knef, is the alter ego of cabaret artist and actor Ulrich Michael Heissig. On the occasion of her upcoming 100th birthday, the “longest-serving chanson cabaret artist in Germany” unveils a new full-length program. The staging blends subtle irony, world-weariness, and playful silliness into a musical cabaret evening. Heissig first brought the character to the stage in Kreuzberg in 1996, and since then Irmgard has developed into an independent persona celebrated by the press. In this centenary program, the grande dame of the slightly seedy showbiz world may sometimes wobble, yet she stands firm on the boards that mean the world. The production mixes sharp-tongued commentary on today’s zeitgeist with nostalgic retrospection, as Heissig portrays the everyday frailties of age with wit and grandezza.
