The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Beethoven en Prokofjev” is built around the idea of youthful, overwhelming power. The program draws a historical and emotional line between two breakthrough premieres a century apart: Beethoven’s First Symphony, which reportedly prompted Emperor Franz II to exclaim “Revolutionary!” at its debut, and Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, premiered by the 22‑year‑old composer himself. The concert shows how both works still sound as bold and gripping as at their first hearings. With a large orchestral force and the kinetic leadership of conductor Maxim Emelyanychev, pianist Alexander Melnikov takes center stage in Prokofiev’s concerto, known for its boundary‑pushing extremity. The evening runs about two hours, including an interval.
