John Neumeier's version of The Nutcracker avoids direct references to Christmas, distinguishing it from traditional stagings. In this concept, the central character Marie celebrates her twelfth birthday and is drawn by the mysterious ballet master Drosselmeier into the fascinating world of dance. Conceived as a “ballet about ballet,” the work pays homage to the art form itself and to Marius Petipa. It is a coming‑of‑age story, as Marie observes, learns, and matures, witnessing quotations of famous Petipa choreographies. Vivid costumes and fairy‑tale designs by Jürgen Rose frame a dreamlike journey in which Marie transforms from child to young woman.
