Korea National Opera launches Wagner’s Das Rheingold to open its multi-year Ring cycle. As the starting point of the epic tetralogy that Wagner completed over 26 years, Das Rheingold condenses the origins of love and power, greed and curse into a mythic narrative. Through the conflict over the Rhine’s gold and the moment when the world’s order begins to fracture, the work first presents the ideas that will run through the entire cycle. Conductor Lothar Koenigs—who made a strong impression with his focused leadership in Die tote Stadt (2024)—reveals the structural tension and energy of Wagner’s music. Director Lorenzo Fioroni—praised for his imaginative, contemporary sensibility in The Love for Three Oranges (2025)—interprets the mythic tale and signals the start of an unprecedented long-term project in Korean opera that will continue through 2028.
