This concert features a program framed by two distinct interpretations of the fandango and Elgar's renowned character portraits. The centerpiece is Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a vibrant violin concerto that garnered a 2024 Latin Grammy. Written specifically for violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, this work is celebrated for its riotous colors and its homage to the Spanish dance form and its evolution in the New World. Complementing this, Roberto Sierra’s Fandangos offers a contemporary reflection on 18th-century fandangos. The program concludes with Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a series of musical sketches depicting the composer's close acquaintances, ranging from tender to gently mocking.
