This production of Alfredo il Grande is part of the #donizetti200 cycle at the Donizetti Opera Festival, an initiative that presents works by the Bergamo-born composer on the bicentenary of their premieres. Originally composed for Naples in 1823, the opera is performed in a new edition verified against original sources, prepared by Edoardo Cavalli. The staging is semi-staged, a stylistic choice that focuses attention on Donizetti’s compositional experimentation in this heroic drama. Direction is by Stefano Simone Pintor, working with an experienced creative team to restore the work’s visual and dramatic dimension within the spaces of the Teatro Donizetti. The project contributes to the rediscovery of Donizetti’s catalogue, highlighting how the composer honed his craft across various operatic genres during his formative and early professional years.
