An updated staging of Eugène Ionesco’s La cantante calva by Compañía El Desleal at Auditorio de Tenerife’s La Salita preserves the play’s comic-absurd tone while introducing a light contemporary adaptation. The production highlights the erosion of verbal communication in a Western society deafened to ongoing crises. Its approach emphasizes fragmented dialogue, rapid pacing, and grotesque character profiles. Direction is by Enzo Scala with assistant direction by Gracia Flores. Design teams include costumes/characterization by Ignacio Dorta, set design by José Soriano, lighting by Miguel Ferrera, sound by David Ramos (Darwin), and graphics by Hugo Cebrián. The director’s note argues against treating the work as a museum piece, instead underlining its present-day relevance. The result foregrounds clichés and rote phrases, showing characters constrained—almost puppet-like—inside a claustrophobic verbal space.
