Deep in the bowels of a decommissioned ocean liner sits a man who has spent his entire life on that ship. For Novecento, the transatlantic steamer is the whole world. Abandoned on board as a foundling, he travels the seas as a fabulously gifted pianist, watching passengers come and go and glimpsing solid land only from the rail. Actor Goetz van Ooyen revives the sea voyage of an entire life in this monologue based on Alessandro Baricco’s 1994 novella. The staging uses Thomas Wolter’s sound design to evoke the atmosphere of the ocean liner and the musical world of the protagonist. This is a minimalist production focused on the actor’s presence and the narrative power of the text. Set and costumes, jointly designed by Uta Gosselck-Perschmann and Goetz van Ooyen, create a timeless, maritime environment.
