Noises Off is a comedy about theatre and the people who make it. It begins with the dress rehearsal of a new play that a troupe hopes to take on tour. Nearly everything that can go wrong on stage does, ending the rehearsal in chaos and a crisis of confidence for everyone involved. The opening is revisited from multiple perspectives, including a behind-the-scenes view during the 29th performance, where nothing runs as planned either. Director Sascha Hawemann characterizes the piece as a tragicomic slapstick farce in the tradition of Chaplin and Buster Keaton rather than boulevard comedy. It explores debates about the purpose of theatre, artists’ social and moral responsibility, and the blurred line between stage life and real life. Hawemann emphasizes the paradoxical ‘freedom in unfreedom’ the piece offers and compares the actors’ work to circus acrobatics.
