Oratorio / Orchestral Concert
This concert is part of the Seoul Philharmonic’s 2026 season theme “Light and Shadow,” continuing Music Director Jaap van Zweden’s Mahler cycle. The program juxtaposes the intensity of contemporary music with the lyricism of late Romanticism: Sofia Gubaidulina’s Viola Concerto (2015 revision, Korean premiere) and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Under van Zweden, listeners encounter Gubaidulina’s uncompromising sound world alongside one of Mahler’s most serene, celestial symphonies. Violist Antoine Tamestit—who made the first recording of the composer’s 2015 revision—explores the instrument’s constantly shifting colors. In the finale of Mahler’s Fourth, soprano Sumi Hwang sings “Das himmlische Leben,” bringing a warm, sunlit close to the evening. This striking contrast deepens the Mahler cycle, highlights the importance of contemporary repertoire, and showcases the orchestra’s broad artistic range.
