Light and darkness, joy and sorrow. Jaap van Zweden’s next Mozart program sets these emotions in stark contrast, reflecting the feelings Mozart might have experienced in his 35 short years. Part I features brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen in Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos, K. 365, showcasing the composer’s radiant, spirited side. After their brilliant duo, the music turns to Mozart’s final work, the Requiem in D minor, K. 626, heard here in the Süssmayr edition. From its opening, the work floods the listener with grief, revealing Mozart’s innate gift for expressing not only joy but also profound, sinking emotions. As the Requiem unfolds, it invites us to contemplate the composer’s untimely death and the enduring power of his genius.
