About this event
The third subscription concert of the 2026 season presents a program of high Romanticism and technical virtuosity. The evening opens with Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain in the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration, a staple of 19th-century Russian program music depicting a witches' sabbath. This is followed by Robert Schumann's Concert Piece for Four French Horns and Orchestra, a work noted for its extreme technical demands on the soloists, requiring a quartet of exceptional horn players. The concert concludes with Richard Strauss's monumental tone poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life). Often considered the pinnacle of his late Romantic orchestral output, the work is characterized by its massive orchestration—including eight horns and two harps—and its autobiographical narrative. The program highlights the virtuosity of the wind sections, particularly through the Schumann and Strauss selections.
