Ballet returns to the Teatro Filarmonico with a witty, fresh double bill pairing two 20th-century gems, both written in 1936. On one side is Menotti’s hilarious opera, a light synthesis and parody of melodramatic clichés, with a strong-willed heroine and a comical love triangle. On the other, the “neoclassical” ballet that Stravinsky wrote for the American Ballet, imagining a musical game of poker with shifting rhythms and tasty quotations from Rossini and Tchaikovsky to Belle Époque dances. This new Fondazione Arena di Verona production is by director and designer Filippo Tonon.
